Max Middleton is the leading representative of the traditional school of Australian landscape painting. He was born in Melbourne in 1922, and studied at the National Gallery School under Harold Septimus Power. He began exhibiting at the age of 23, and the success of his first exhibitions allowed the artist to embark on travel studies around Europe and South East Asia. Since then, he has held numerous exhibitions throughout Australia, and his paintings have been acquired by state and regional galleries, as well as private collections in Australia and overseas.

Exhibition News:

Kristin Headlam's - The Art of Politics, opening took on a deadly twist!
After a forced recess due to the lack of a hunting season. The much heralded Dead Animal Dinner coincided with the opening of Kristin Headlam's – the art of politics over the June long weekend.
The gathered dinners celebrate the exhibition during pre dinner drinks before tucking in to the various courses of wild game. All provided by locals and prepared in the Art Space kitchen with a band of willing helpers of family and friends.  Charles and Nati Nodrum and Kristin Headlam attended, the hunters were also in attendance.  Headlam commented it was the most extraordinary exhibition opening she had ever had.

Mandy Ridley based in Brisbane after spending her childhood in Cowwarr and exhibiting at the Cowwarr Art Space in 2008 with RECAST, has completed two major public artworks this year.  Ridley states ...."My work as a visual artist includes both exhibition and permanently installed Public artworks: each aspect working to strengthen and inform the entire art practice...."

mandy_ridley_flow.jpgFlow 2009 Laser cut Aluminium with powder coat surface.
Surface area approximately 1600 square metres.
Flow was installed earlier in the year for the Darwin Waterfront Project.
Commissioned for the Darwin City Waterfront Project the artwork depicts the grandeur and power of water. The cycles of nature and the ocean have both been critical in shaping the physical and cultural environment of Darwin through climate and immigration.

This artwork was produced as a result of working collaboratively with UAP, Urban Art Projects in Brisbane. I wish to acknowledge the support and contribution of Belinda Smith, Lead Designer.

Many individuals, who worked across a variety of disciplines – each with its own language and tradition – all contributed their expertise to the history of this site.
The Bowen Bridge Porphyry Wall stands as testament to their endeavours.
The highly formalised and decorative text is referenced from the Donor boards of the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) and lists some of those who made a significant financial contribution to the establishment of the early Brisbane Hospital. The Donor boards symbolise the heart of the hospital and
map the social structures and relationships of the times.
The artwork articulates some significant layers of history intrinsic to the surrounding area.
