Frank Mesaric - the making of a Portrait

This exhibition explored the process of a commissioned portrait, with original studies, images of the work in progress to the completed portrait.
The opening event on Sunday afternoon April 19 was well attended by supporters of artist, FRANK MESARIC, and the subject, John O'Brien. The insightful introduction by Melbourne based arts manager Eugene Barilo von Reisberg was deeply appreciated. The event was capped off with award winning Gippsland wine from Narkoojee served from the Artists Bar.

Major Canberra Sculpture Commission - CANCELLED

I know there has been plenty of support and interest in the fate of the Canberra sculpture commission. Clive was a finalist along with Aspect Studios and Arcimix. After 18 months of an arduous selection process that included submissions, concept design, concept development, site inspections and interviews, it was deeply disappointing to have the whole thing cancelled. With such a big commitment to the project, one might have expected a little more than hearing the news first from the press and then a hurried fax from the ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope MLA. I could be getting cynical but it felt like a "Yes Minister episode" to receive the News/Fax on Friday the 24th of April at 4:30pm, just prior to a Canberra long weekend for ANZAC day. CAN Inc. News:
Aehee Park - international resident artist

AEHEE PARK is a Masters graduate from Hansung University. Her career highlights include a number of solo exhibitions in contemporary art spaces in Seoul and major selected exhibitions: Expenditure/Pusan Biennale, Pusan Metropolitan Contemporary Art Museum, Pusan, Korea 2008 Media scene in Seoul Merz's room in the 4th Seoul International Media Art Biennale, Korea in 2006 Domicile prive/public Musee d'Art Moderne, Saint-Etienne, Paris, France in 2005.
Aehee is keen to be involved in the contemporary arts community and is working both on her current project and improving her English. She is also our new gallery assistant.
Short term resident artist
In June we will be welcoming JANINA GREEN, an artist and lecturer in Photography at the VCA for a short residency in the newly renovated Basement Studio. Janina will be working on a project that will be part of her exhibition at the Latrobe Regional Gallery later this year.
Success for our recent past resident artists:
BEHROUZ RAE is very busy these days because of his upcoming shows. In June there's three Basel, London and Kunstraum Museum in Salzburg. Behrouz is also having discussions with a NY gallery after the success of having the Guggenheim Museum NY purchase three works from the exhibition Raad o Baargh: 16 Artists From Iran Galerie Thaddeus Ropac, Paris, early this year.
MARIA-LUISA MARINO is still living in Gippsland and is now currently working as the gallery technician at the Gippsland Art Gallery Sale. Detail of Maria-Luisa's work from Soujourn in White.
CLAIRE WATSON, a member of our CAN Inc. board and the past curator of the Gippsland Art Gallery Sale, is now part of the Asia Link team in Melbourne. In this capacity she was a speaker at the Trans-Cultural Exchange conference in Boston, USA in April this year. She met colleagues from around the world and talked about the issues of international residencies. This was quite apt as Claire was responsible for creating the international project Sojourn in White. This project combined artists from a residency in Finland with Maria-Luisa Marino, Cowwarr Art Space resident artist 2007-08, and brought Behrouz Rae to Cowwarr, as our international resident, from Iran for a short residency in October, November of last year. Sojourn in White exhibition was held at the Cowwarr Art Space in November 2008 and was included in Here There and Everywhere: Anticipating the Art for the Future Place: Part I-Rural as part of the Boston Trans-Cultural Exchange conference.
